“Canada Bay: Revisited” tells the unknown and untold story of the Canadian Patriots from Lower and Upper Canada who were exiled to a penal colony in Australia from 1840 to 1848.
This documentary will explore the defeat of the 1838 Patriot rebellion by the British army and its aftermath, which resulted in 98 Canadians being exiled to the penal colony of Tasmania and Australia. The focus will be on the six months journey the Patriots had to undertake and endure, which commenced in Montreal and concluded in Australia. We will explore the challenges that they had to overcome when arriving in Sydney, their arduous time at the Longbottom Stockade as Political Prisoners and their eventual adjustment to the penal colony upon receiving their ticket of leave. In the third act, we will focus on their return voyage to Canada, the growth of Canada & Australia in relation to each other since 1848 and the legacies the Patriots left behind in both continents, which still stand tall today.
Throughout the three acts of our documentary we will have one Canadian and one Australian Name Actor to introduce and narrate the documentary at key locations that involved the Patriots. We will also have three more Canadian Name Actors narrate the text taken straight from the written journals of the Patriots, relaying in their first-hand accounts of their experiences. Moreover, we will interview Trish Skehan, (Chief Australian Historian expert on the Patriots of Longbottom), Gilles Laporte (Chief Quebec Patriot Historian) the directors of LA MAISON LEPAILLEUR in Chateauguay and ex-Quebec Premier Bernard Landry who will all share further knowledge about the Patriots and their legacy in Australia and in Quebec. With 60% of the documentary already filmed, we are negotiating a licensing deal with both local and Australian broadcasters in order to finalize the editing of the documentary to their standards.
