The outrageous, shocking and unheard but true story of the Canadian exploitation genre cinema of the 1970s and 80s told by the ones who lived it and made it happen.
Blood & Popcorn looks at the moment when Canadian cinema broke the shackles of a flat, highly conservative society and started producing films dedicated to entertaining a mass audience. An abundance of free-wheelin’ sexy blood-soaked terror tales and high-octane action extravaganzas were released and found enthusiastic audiences not only in Canada but around the World. This documentary looks at these great exploitive films through real stories from the people who made it happen as well as the people who were inspired by these films. Come and see what bit of Canadian film history most didn’t even know was Canadian.
For the past 2 years, Deke Richards and Francesco Giannini have been interviewing the key individuals that are behind the existence of the golden age of Canadian cult films. The goal now is to interview A-list stars such as Jamie Lee Curtis that started her career with such films as Prom Night, as well as Quentin Tarantino that claims that one of his inspirational films is Death Weekend. Negotiations are underway with The Movie Network for a broadcaster’s license and we will explore the opportunities with digital platforms such as Netflix and Shutter.
